Knees Up uses workshops, trips and street parties to bring people together, supporting them to make positive changes to their community.  We work in Tower Hamlets, a borough with a very diverse population and with large gaps between rich and poor.  Sometimes, it can be hard for people to feel like they are part of a community.

Marie's story

I met new people at the party. There was a family on the other side, she'd lived here for 20 years and I didn't even know. I mean I'd often seen her but I thought she was new to the scene. But she said, no she'd been brought up in the estate. And I said "well I've been here ten years". I said "I didn't even know you lived round here". So – that was good. And we're still friends now.

106 languages are spoken in Tower Hamlets schools.

"I think that in the environment we live in, it is a bit difficult sometimes for people to get to know each other.  In the East End of London, people become quite cold, or they seem to be.  Sometimes you need a place to go where you can be encouraged more to talk to each other. You get to understand that maybe there are a lot more people like you than you though there were."
Woman scarves

29% of Tower Hamlets residents volunteer in some way for their local community.

People in poorer areas are less likely to introduce themselves to a new neighbour than those in richer areas.
