Frequently Asked Questions

General

Q: What does QSA do?
A: We are an East London regeneration charity working to counteract poverty and social exclusion. We run 5 practical projects; HomeLink, HomeStore, StreetCred, Made of Money? and Knees Up.

Q: I want to volunteer for QSA, what should I do?
A: Go to our Volunteering for QSA pages.

Q: Do you do religious education work and do you only work with Quakers?
A: No, though we are governed by Quakers and work to a Quaker ethos there is nothing evangelical about our work. Our projects are open to everyone and our diverse staff and volunteer team come from a wide range of cultures, religions and backgrounds.

Q: Do you have to be a Quaker to work at QSA?
A: No, our diverse staff and volunteer team come from a wide range of cultures, religions and backgrounds.

Q: What is your link to the rest of the Quaker work and the people at friends house?
A: QSA is a wholly independent charity. We are forging strong links with Friends House and have good relations with other Quaker charities.

Q: How do you fund your work?
A: One of QSA's great strengths is the diversity of our funding. We have 5 income streams;

  • The Quaker community
  • Charitable trusts
  • Public funds (both government and European)
  • Corporate supporters
  • Earned Income

If you want to find out ways you can support QSA, go to our get involved pages!

Q: What is your vision?
A: QSA's vision is that of a society where there is full and real equality of opportunity, belief in the value of diversity and where all people feel there is a place for them to be part of and contribute to, their community.
Exclusion, from housing, employment and opportunities have devastating effects upon individuals, families and societies. Prejudice, stigma, lack of self-worth or purpose, can be experienced by those who feel society has no place for them. QSA's response is to develop innovative work and practical projects for these people.

Q: Which parts of London do you operate in?
A: We work in Hackney, Waltham Forest, Newham, Tower Hamlets, Redbridge, Islington, Haringey and Barking and Dagenham. Not all our projects work in all these boroughs.

Q: Why only East London?
A: We have been working in east London since 1867 when concerned Quakers established the Bedford Institute Association to provide support to local people living in abject poverty. The boroughs and wards of East London are still some of the poorest and most deprived in the country and we feel our practical projects have a large impact on the local community. For more information click on background to east London. We do however work with organisations outside of london and are part of a number of londonwide and national consortiums such as Accelerating Womens Enterprise.

Q: I live up north/in Wales/in Australia (delete as appropriate) and would love to start up similar work here, how would I go about that?
A: We are always excited that others think so highly of our work that they want to replicate it. If you are interested please contact infoATqsa.org.uk or phone 020 8983 9199 and we will put you in contact with the right person.

Q: How many partners do you work with?
A: We work with over 600 partners.

StreetCred

Q: Why is StreetCred only for women?
A: Research has shown that micro-credit projects have the greatest impact when they work exclusively with women. Also only 25% of new businesses in the country are set up by women and StreetCred is part of a consortium working hard to increase this number.

HomeLink

Q: Does HomeLink provide emergency housing?
A: No, we only house people who have been referred to us by local housing agencies, who are not eligible for priority housing. If you need emergency housing advise call Shelterline on 0808 800 444.

Q: Is HomeLink part of Quaker Homeless Action?
A: No, QHA is a separate charity, but we have links with each other. For example QHA uses our HomeLink offices in the run up to their Christmas activities. They also make grants for our work housing single homeless people.

HomeStore

Q: I want to donate furniture what should I do?
A: Contact HomeStore and they will arrange to come and collect the items. Thanks for thinking of us.
